Equine-Assisted Tutoring: Where the Stable Becomes the Classroom
At Celestial Equine Connections, we believe that for many students, the traditional four-walled classroom can feel like a barrier to learning. Our Equine-Assisted Tutoring program takes academic concepts off the page and into the paddock, using the natural motivation and sensory environment of the barn to help students overcome learning hurdles.
Why Tutoring with Horses?
Equine-assisted learning is an educational approach that integrates horses into the learning process. It is particularly effective for students with ADHD, Dyslexia, and other learning differences who may struggle with stationary, lecture-based instruction.
In the barn, "boring" subjects come to life:
Multisensory Engagement: Students use their sight, sound, touch, and movement to process information, which strengthens memory and retention.
Reduced Anxiety: The presence of a non-judgmental "Gentle Professor" lowers cortisol levels, helping students feel safe enough to take risks and try new things.
Immediate Feedback: Horses respond instantly to a student’s focus and energy, teaching them the value of patience and concentration in real-time.
Our Educational Tracks
We specialize in bridging the gap between the stable and the schoolhouse through two primary focuses:
Horse-Powered Reading® (ELA)
We utilize the renowned Horse-Powered Reading® curriculum to help students improve phonemic awareness, fluency, and reading comprehension.
Visualizing the Story: Students may navigate a "story obstacle course" where they physically move a horse through different plot points or character developments.
Building Vocabulary: Identifying parts of the horse or tack provides a tangible way to build complex vocabulary and spelling skills.
Barn-Based Math (STEM/STEAM)
Math isn't just numbers on a whiteboard; it’s the language of the barn. We help students master concepts through practical application:
Measurement & Ratios: Calculating feed amounts, weighing hay, or measuring water intake.
Geometry & Physics: Understanding the angles of a jump, the circumference of a round pen, or the biomechanics of a horse’s stride.
Data Tracking: Monitoring horse health stats or timing gait transitions to practice graphing and averages.
